Tutor Bio

From BMT Tutor Wiki

Main bio

A compelling tutor bio allows us to to show you in the best possible light when we recommend you as a match to potential clients.

Clients will usually decide who they want to work with based on three factors:

  1. Tutor Photo
  2. Tutor bio (this page)
  3. Specific job application

so let's make the bio good since you only have to do it once!

Elements

A good bio will be personable, friendly, and informative - giving a sense of your personality as well as your experience and credentials.

Good tutor bios usually include some, or even all of the following information:

  • Personal Background
    • Where you grew up
  • Credentials
    • Schools you attended and attained Bachelor's and other degrees
    • If you have teaching license, please include in your bio
    • Test score if relevant and you have a good score on the SAT or you've super-scored on the ACT
  • Your approach to education
  • Tutoring Experience
    • How many years
    • What age group
    • Any accomplishment (i.e. 'All my ACT students improved their scores by 3points within 2-4months of working with me')
  • Other professions outside tutoring if applicable
  • Hobbies

Examples

Your bio should generally be written in your own style, but here are some examples of other people's bios to give you an idea of how to start.

Example 1 - Neal

Neal has a decade of mentoring and teaching experience and has taught physics, chemistry, biology, physical science, environmental science, and middle school mathematics to students ranging from 7th-12th grade. He also has extensive tutoring experience in middle/high school math, science, and standardized test prep, and believes that forming a productive, trusting relationship with students is critical to long-term success. Neal is currently a Science Education graduate student at Teachers College, Columbia University and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Physics, a B.A. in Biology, and a Bachelor of Science in Life/Physical Science Secondary Education from Miami University. He enjoys sharing his love of math and science with students and is constantly seeking innovative ways to personalize content to a student’s real-world experiences and interests.

Example 2 - Nathaniel

Nathaniel, Yale '15, has tutored full-time in NYC for five years. His students range from 7-18, and he is always delighted to make connections with new families. He's a standardized test pro, and his students have nailed the ISEE, SSAT, SHSAT, ACT, SAT, AP exams, and increased in-class test scores with his help and guidance. Every one of his standardized test students, whether they're applying to high school or college, has gotten into at least one of their top three schools.

Nathaniel has tutored all levels of math, science, history, and English from elementary to high school. His training in executive functioning has also helped his students with learning disabilities, including ADHD and dyslexia. He is fluent in Spanish and also speaks French, Italian, and some German. As a performer he has traveled to over 50 countries, and he has lived abroad in Ireland, the UK, Italy, Germany, and South America.

Nathaniel's greatest skill is breaking down complex math and English concepts for each individual student's learning style. He believes in a straightforward, kind approach to learning that makes it as easy as possible for the student. He looks forward to helping you and your student meet your academic goals!

Current Tutor Bios

For more inspiration, please see the list of our current tutors and check out their bios: https://www.brooklynmathtutors.com/team-and-tutors#/

Requirements

Your full bio should in general be somewhere between 150 to 250 words. Any longer and we risk overwhelming parents with information.

Submitting your Bio

Please send your bio via email to team@brooklynmathtutors.com

We may edit your bio for better flow and impact but will generally keep most of it as is.

Email Bio

An email bio is a highly-condensed version of your full bio that we send to parents as part of your job application.

Parents will generally see your email bio, followed by your application, and are then invited to read your full bio on our website. Your email bio should have the most compelling information distilled from your full bio to entice parents to learn more about you.

Examples

Although we don't have a way for tutors to view all current email bios, here are the (current) email bios for the two tutors above to give you an idea of what an email bio might look like.

Example 1 - Neal

Neal has been a math & science teacher for over 10 years and also has extensive tutoring experience. He is currently working on a graduate degree at Teachers College, Columbia University. Neal is both engaging and organized, and his passion for education is clear from the moment you meet him.

Requirements

Please keep your email bio to 70 words or less and submit it along with your full bio to team@brooklynmathtutors.com.

We will generally edit your "email bio" to make it come from our (BMT's) perspective, but we will aim to use the email bio you submit as a starting point.
